Hello people of the internet! On today’s ‘YouTube Wednesday’ blog, I am going to introduce you all to a PHENOMINAL new musician that I recently found out about through Twitter. First, please allow me to list a few names for you: Mumford & Sons, Coldplay, The Civil Wars…what do all of these artists have in common? They became stars in their various genres due to their unique sound. Well, please allow me to introduce you to a young artist who will soon be following in their footsteps. People of the internet, please allow me to introduce…Jake West. Now if you don’t know his name yet…you will! This artist’s music has a very unique vibe that will instantly draw you in, and keep you wanting more. I have watched several of Jake’s videos on YouTube, and I have found that he is able to take any cover song, and perform it in a way that instantly gives the song new life. Through his videos, this young entertainer has been able to display his advance level of artistry, which is very important attribute for an aspiring star to have. Not only is he an amazing vocalist, but he is also an impressive guitarist (which is another great comodity for a musician to have). I definitely feel that this guy will take the music industry by storm within the next few years.
Jake West is a 20 year old singer from Leeds, which is a city in West Yorkshire, England. He has stated in a YouTube video that he started learning to play the guitar 5-6 years ago, and began seriously pursuing a career in music about 3 years ago when he joined YouTube ( I will talk about this video later in the blog but spoiler alert....it's AWESOME!!!). An interesting fact about Jake is that he is a twin (you can see a hilarious video that involves Jake and his twin in the video linked here (I Should Probably Introduce Myself... ). Ok, so now let’s get to the music!!! I cannot stress enough how much I love Jake’s very unique vocal tone. Although he has a folksy vibe, he is so unique, that if you heard him on the radio, you would instantly know that you were listening to a Jake West song. He also has a very impressive vocal range, which is evident from his AMAZING cover of Cee Lo Green’s hit ‘Forget You’ Cee Lo Green - Forget You (Jake West acoustic cover) - YouTube. Although this is a different take on the song, Jake includes all of the essential (and very impressive) high notes that Cee Lo incorporated in the original version. I really love how Jake made this song his own, and gave the track a very wounded/angry vibe, which truly conveyed that he was able to connect with the emotionally charged lyrics of the song. Another cover that Jake has done that I was very impressed by was his medley/mashup of Usher’s hit ‘DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love and LMFAO’s party hit ‘Party Rock Anthem’ DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love / Party Rock Anthem Jake West acoustic mashup. I really loved how Jake was able to slow down these two high energy tracks, without making the songs lose their power. He did a really good job grabbing and keeping the audience’s attention, and he did all this live (just as he does all of his covers)! I definitely have a great deal of respect for any artist who can sound amazing live, and Jake has proven through his cover videos that he can sound just as well live, as he can in a recording studio.
Although Jake has made some really excellent cover videos, he has not shied away from the fact that he also has an abundance of original material to share with his fans. Jake released his first original song entitled ‘Ambitions’ on YouTube on April 18th, 2011 Jake West - Ambitions (Original song) . This song is an extremely good example of just how great of an artist Jake naturally is. This track has a very mellow vibe to it, and displays an interesting fusion of pop meets folk music. ‘Ambitions’ tells the story of a relationship gone wrong, and the song showed very early on that Jake already knew what type of artist he wanted to be, and knew how to play to his vocal and stylistic strengths. Jake continued to post original music, and released his EP’ Lost & Found’ to ITunes on February 1st, 2013. Before the official release of his EP, Jake released the official music video for his track ‘Believe’ Jake West - Believe - Official Music Video. This song has a very Mumford & Sons vibe that I just instantly fell in love with. ‘Believe’ is a powerful song about how the world shuts out faith, and many are reluctant to open their minds and believe in the things that they cannot see. Through this track, Jake’s smooth vocals are able to give off a peaceful vibe, which adds to the overall tone of the song, and really gives power to his message. On April 1st, 2013, Jake released the lyric video to another AMAZING track off of his ‘Lost & Found’ EP, entitled ‘ Give Me Your Love’ Jake West - Give Me Your Love - Lyric Video (EP OUT NOW on iTunes!) - YouTube. ‘Give Me Your Love’ is a track about giving your heart and love to God, even though you can’t understand how you are worthy enough to receive his love back. This song is so poetic that it could definitely be interpreted as giving another person your love, which makes it the perfect Valentine’s Day/Wedding song. I really love how honest and beautiful the lyrics to this song are, and I have had it on repeat ever since I first heard it (trust me you will too!). I would highly suggest that you check out the other tracks on Jake’s EP, because they are all PHENOMINAL tracks. As I’ve said before, my favorite musicians and bands are always those who release LPs (full length albums) or EPs that keep me interested throughout the entire album. Jake’s ‘Lost & Found’ EP certainly captures and keeps my attention from the first note. I suggest that you all invest in this EP, because I promise that you will not be disappointed! I mean, 5 AMAZING tracks for only $4.95…where else are you going to find a better deal than this!?!
Along with his videos, Jake has also posted a few vlogs which are so hilarious and witty that I definitely think that he could have a second career in comedy...or maybe he could be a singing comedian...Jake I'm telling you, consider it. My favorite vlog is definitely Jake's 'Terrible Ideas' vlog (which actually has some really amazing ideas...just a side note...), in this video he explains some of the "Terrible Ideas" he has had for videos...I'm not going to give away too much about this video because it really is a MUST SEE, but there is a 'Nemo Cup' and a 'Forever Alone' seat...enough said TERRIBLE IDEAS. Another vlog that I really love is Jake's 'Quarter Life Crisis' vlog (Attention all parents and legal guardians PLEASE do not push your offspring into a quarter life crisis...it is a real thing...). In this video, Jake describes what a 'Quarter Life Crisis' is, and how to avoid getting stuck in one (spoiler alert: there is a “career counselor” with a 'One Direction' poster in his "office"...check out the video here The Quarter-Life Crisis to find out what that's about. It is definitely not fair that he can be this musically talented and funny….some people get all the talent…and no watching 10 hours of Netflix in a single day is not a talent…trust me, I’ve checked.
I definitely see a VERY bright future on the horizon for Jake. He has been able to find a niche in music that not many can occupy. I certainly believe that it will not be long before this amazingly talented guy breaks into the U.S. and becomes inescapable ( just think about it for a minute, how many times in the past few years has a young guy from the UK broken into the U.S. market and become a huge hit here and worldwide…seriously think about it…Ed Sheeran, One Direction… Jake West…yeah that sounds right to me!). With his outstanding artistry and ability to charm his audience, I see no reason why Jake West does not become a household name very soon, and long standing presence in the music industry. So start saving up your money now everyone, because one day in the near future this talented guy is going to headline his own world tour, and guarantee you that tickets will sell out very soon…you’ve been warned!
