Hello people of the internet! On today’s YouTube Wednesday blog, I will introduce you to another AMAZING artist (everybody clap!!!!). This artist can rap, play multiple instruments, write infectious songs, and puts fun twists on current and vintage hits. I have been a HUGE fan of this YouTuber for many years, and it has been interesting to watch him grow as an artist over time. His videos are entertaining, and he even has amazing merchandise that will help you stay comfortable and stylish. Who is this artist you ask!? It’s Jason Chen!!! (aren’t you glad you asked!). Keep reading, in order to see exactly why Jason Chen is an artist that you should add to your YouTube and personal playlists.
Jason Chen is a singer/songwriter from California. He learned to play the violin by ear at a young age (I know that makes me feel so untalented L). Jason’s website states that he began singing at the age of 17; “for the purpose of asking a girl to prom” (I wonder if she went with him?). Although Jason always had a deep passion for music, he graduated from UCLA with a degree in Business Economics in 2010 and began working as an accountant. When Jason was in college his roommates convinced him to post clips of himself singing on YouTube and as a result, Jason was inadvertently put on a path that would lead him to great success and global acclaim.
On October 21st, 2007 Jason posted a cover of Ryan Tedder’s song ‘The Look’ The Look Cover Jason Chen - YouTube(as far as I know, Ryan Tedder never released this song, but he did perform the track on an MTV sponsored singing completion show, which won Ryan a contract with former N Sync star Lance Bass’ company ‘FreeLance Entertainment’). Jason can also be seen accompanying himself on the guitar in the cover video. Jason continued to release videos throughout the duration of his time in college, and now a little over 6 years later, Jason has reached the achievment of obtaining 949,598 subscribers on YouTube. What I really love about Jason’s channel, is that he covers tracks from a wide range of genres which I feel really shows what a great and versatile entertainer he is. After a few years of success on YouTube, Jason built his own studio and created his brand ‘Music Never Sleeps’ (isn’t that an awesome name!). Jason also sells t-shirts, sweaters, and various other merchandise items under his ‘Music Never Sleeps’ brand. His first original song was entitled 'When I Get Home’ When I Get Home - (Jason Chen Original) Acoustic Snippet ft. Paul Dateh & Gerald Ko - YouTube, which is about the joy of reuniting with someone you are in a relationship with, after a long time apart. In this track, Jason demonstrated his strong, natural R&B roots, and amazing yet seemingly effortless vocal skills. Jason has also collaborated with various other YouTube stars such as Megan Nicole, Tiffany Alvord, MattyB, Joseph Vincent, Madilyn Bailey, Alyssa Bernal, Alex G, and various others. Jason has had the opportunity to travel extensively due to his career, and in 2011 appeared on the popular Chinese show ‘Day Day Up’ with Megan Nicole and Tiffany Alvord. On December 30th, 2011, Jason released his debut album ‘Gravity’ which currently has 5 stars on ITunes. Jason released music videos for his singles ‘Best Friend’( Best Friend - Jason Chen (Official Music Video) - YouTube), ‘Gravity’ (Gravity - Jason Chen (Official Music Video) - YouTube), and ‘No Distance’ (No Distance - Jason Chen (Official Music Video) - YouTube). Jason released his sophomore album ‘Never for Nothing’ on April 15th, 2013, and released music videos for the singles ‘AutoTune’ ("AutoTune" - (Official Music Video) Jason Chen ft. Bubzbeauty - YouTube) and ‘Invisible’ ("Invisible" - (Official Music Video) Jason Chen ft. Megan Nicole - YouTube).
I definitely see a HUGE future for Jason Chen, due to his talent and uniqueness as an artist. I think it is obvious that Jason is a talented vocalist (I mean listen to his videos, seriously you’ll be addicted) however, what I really love about Jason is his way of making a cover song sound like he wrote it, and producing catchy original music. I feel as if Jason’s vocal talent is also genre-less, which will allow him the freedom to allow his artistry to truly shine and develop. I feel as if Jason has only demonstrated a small portion of what makes him an amazing artist, and I certainly see him becoming a radio staple within the next few years. I definitely feel like we are in the “YouTube era”, and that Jason is leading the pack. If you were not previously familiar with the name Jason Chen, then watch his videos ASAP, because Jason Chen is a name that will be inescapable for years to come.
